Title: Making nests for bumble bees Authors: Manfred
Inthenthron & John Gerrard Edited by: IBRA |
The inspiration behind this book is Manfred Intenthron who has been fascinated by humble bees since he was 6 years old. He loves them and what he knows about them comes from his own observations and not from books. When two years ago I gave him the book by F.W.L. Sladen to read he said: " What more is there to say? It's all here." But that is not true. There is still a lot more to say and he knows some of it as this book shows.
Thirty years ago Manfred and his family moved to a suburban house with a back garden. It is about %z mile (1 km) from the centre of a town with a population of 70,000 and the garden measures about 900 sq. yards. (750 sq. metre), a very ordinary size. Gradually Manfred planted it with flowers to attract his humble bees and then started to experiment with artificial nests to keep them there. He has now learned the art and for the last 5 years his garden has been home to about 30 nests each year, an extraordinary achievement.
Manfred is now 72 years old but still spends the winter getting his home-made humble bee nests ready, the spring making sure they are occupied and the summer looking after the growing colonies inside them. He says he still has a lot to learn.
