The Apimondia International Institute of Beekeeping Technology and Economy was opened in 1970, as an annex institution to the International Federation of Beekeeping Associations (Apimondia). The Institute's main goals are to organize technical and economical activities for the promotion of beekeeping throughout the world for Apimondia, by using the potential offered by national research institutes in member countries, specialized businesses within these countries, as well as the Institutes own research and production departments. The Federation chose Romania as host country for the Institute.

The IITAE has organized (and is still organizing) the following activities:

The Institute is run by an International management committee, which includes the Director-general of the IITAE Institute. Every year, the Institute pays the Federation 10% of its annual gross income. Since 2002, IITAE is renamed "Apimondia Foundation".
