Mission
The major objectives of the commission are in accordance to the general objectives of Apimondia which are to promote apicultural scientific, technical and economic development. The Apimondia Standing Commission for Melliferous Flora and Pollination (SCMFP) is working to realise these objectives along two major lines:
| the role of bees as necessary pollinators for agricultural crops and natural flora; | |
| the importance of plants as food sources, mainly for pollen and nectar, for bees. |
Activities
Concerning the function of bees in pollination, it is the task of the Apimondia SCMFP to obtain more knowledge about the pollinator essentials to improve the production of traditional crops, and of those crops that offer important new perspectives. The Commission deals with Apis bees, but looks also into the specific role that is played by bees other than Apis mellifera, and also non-Apis bees, for example bumble bees. The Commission is also working on obtaining knowledge concerning special characteristics of honey types from certain regions and on analysis of the botanical origin of honeys, pollen and even propolis. It remains active in the identification and study of pollen grains (Mellisopalynology) of beefoodplants and honey producing plants in different countries. The Commission is involved of the attention that must be given to the role that bees play as pollinators of the natural environment.
Members
The Commission is organised under the presidency of: Dr. Marinus J. Sommeijer (The Netherlands)
Various activities are carried out in collaboration with a varying number of international specialists. For example the Specialists Meeting on Pollination in Greenhouses (1999/10) was organised in collaboration with Dr. Aad de Ruijter, The Netherlands, and the International Pollination Course in Costa Rica (2001/02) is organised in cooperation with Prof. Henry Arce, Costa Rica. The latter course will be lectured by Prof. Amotz Dafni, Israel, and Dr. Peter Kevan, Canada. The proceedings of the Greenhouse Pollination meeting are already available.
