Mission

Dear Friends,

Beekeeping is a marvellously worthwhile activity that can help people to create sustainable livelihoods. It gives people valuable sources of income and nutrition, and yet the input costs can be very low. Beekeeping is a highly sustainable form of agriculture that is beneficial to the environment and provides economic reasons for people to look after their local habitat.

The purpose of the Standing Commission for Beekeeping for Rural Development is to provide a forum for sharing information on how apiculture can contribute to the development of sustainable livelihoods.

Activities

Each Apimondia Congress provides us with a unique opportunity to meet together, share information and learn. For development workers the most useful aspect of the Congress is to meet with others doing similar work The Commission endeavours to locate funding for projects in the poorest countries to be represented at each Apimondia Congress. Once there, we organise a reception at the beginning of the Congress so everyone can meet. We organise The Alternative Bee Space, a friendly and busy area within ApiExpo where beekeeping projects have the opportunity to arrange displays and make informal presentations about their work.

In addition to the large Congresses, the Standing Commission for Beekeeping for Rural Development also organise smaller, regional meetings (for example the Caribbean Congresses held in Trinidad and Tobago in 1998, and Nevis in 2000). News about the Commission is presented regularly in the journal "Beekeeping & Development”.
