This book was awarded the gold medal at the XXXVII Apimondia Congress in Durban South Africa 2001. It was written because many beekeepers, even experts, have trouble conceptualising the essence and mechanism of nest abandonment by swarms of honeybees. It contains an absolutely new approach to bee migratory and exploratory behaviours from a psychobiological point of view and revolutionises the current knowledge of most of its most mysterious aspects - based on well-documented and proven universal mechanisms of adaptation and stress.

The book is written for both experienced beekeepers and scientists. It explains everything in a clear, straight-forward manner, so the reader can easily understand even the seemingly complicated psychical processes of steering swarming, absconding, migration and related behaviours. Topics covered include swarming on supersedure or emergency queen cells, the new nest choosing mechanism, queen cell construction and destruction cycle, amalgamations of swarms, disjoining of the honeybee colony in the process of natural swarming, absconding of small swarms from micro-nucleuses during mating flights, etc. These amazing phenomena are discussed in the context of a wide range of neuro-psychophysiological mechanisms such as: sensitisation, stereotypies, engorgement, clustering, release of hormones and pheromones, psychotropic value of some stimuli etc,

This book contains a huge amount of practical bee-keeping know-how on almost all aspects of swarming behaviour. This knowledge allows beekeepers to:

  1. recognise swarming stress reactions,

  2. preciously assess the level of the swarming mood in the colony,

  3. calculate the economic impact of stress stimuli on different forms of bee productivity,

  4. assess the value of the genetic sensitivity of bees to stress,

  5. understand the methods of swarming prevention and control,

  6.  understand the non-specificity of stress reactions, the nature of social stress and social competition, influence of tranquillising (psychotropic) pheromones on bees, the role of acquired and genetic memory on learning, simple and concrete bee thinking, imprinting, bonding to the nest, organisation of social homeostasis, the reproductive and psychical dominance of the queen over workers,

  7. understand the physiological processes steering recruitment dances,

  8. understand the physiological background of the evolution of honeybee societies, etc .

At the end of this book, the author presents conclusions which break from the traditional Aristotelian understanding of swarming behaviours. One of the most startling conclusions drawn is - "Thus, natural swarming is not reproduction or reproduction of honeybee colonies by division" (page 198)."
